Mongolia

Mongolia is a geographically diverse country, landlocked between China and Russian Siberia. Snow capped mountains dominate in the west giving way to grasslands in the centre and north. To the east lies the Asian steppe, to the south the vast emptiness of the Gobi desert – home to several rare animals including Bactrian camels, snow leopards, Przhevalsky horses and Gobi bears.

In the 13th century the great Khans of Mongolia created the largest land empire the world has ever known stretching from the shores of the Pacific to the edge of Europe.  Mongolia has always stirred up visions of the untamed and even today, outside of Ulan Bator there is the feeling of stepping into another century rather than another country.

Mongolia’s main population is centred around the capital city of Ulan Bator which is the country’s political, commercial and cultural centre.  The centuries old Naadam Festival is celebrated annually in mid July in Ulan Bator, when herdsmen travel from all over the country to take part in large-scale national games – wrestling, horseracing and archery.

In the westernmost corner of Mongolia lies the rugged land of Kazakh people.  Living in harsh, barren valleys surrounded by Altai mountains, Kazakhs preserved their centuries old traditions and culture almost intact.  Among them is the ancient tradition of hunting with Golden Eagles.

Often referred to as the ‘Land of the Blue Sky’, Mongolian winters can be quite harsh, the best time to visit being from May through to August.  Solid walking shoes are required, as is a sense of adventure and a willingness to be at one with nature.

Blue Planet Holidays - Holidays - Ulaanbaatar Hotel, Ulan Bator, Mongolia

Ulaanbaatar Hotel, Ulan Bator, Mongolia

The Ulaanbaatar Hotel is centrally located close to Government House. All 119 rooms are clean and comfortable with private en suite facilities and satellite T.V. Dining includes Mongolian, Asian and Continental cuisine. The hotel is approximately 15 minutes drive from the airport.

Traditional Tents / Gers, Mongolia

Outside Ulan Bator, accommodation is in the traditional circular tents or ‘gers’, made from canvas stretched around a fixed wooden framework. Facilities are very basic, each ger containing 4 beds, a wood stove, table and chairs, but little else - the communal shower block is separate and there is a central dining tent. Hot water is not always available. This tour is therefore only suited to more adventurous travellers who are prepared to accept these basic facilities, which are in fact the best available in these destinations. Our chosen operator has again secured accommodation based on 2 passengers only in each ger instead of 4. Naturally this has resulted in higher costs but it is felt that most of their passengers would prefer this arrangement.

Asia Star Hotel, Changshan Mountains, China

Located between Changshan Mountain and Erhai Lake is the Asia Star Hotel. The old city of Dali is just ten-minute walk away and the hotels 300 rooms offer views of the mountain or lake. The hotel has a restaurant offering both local and international cuisine and a fitness centre with sauna.

Mongolian people have a rich history, stretching back to the empires of Genghis Khan. Their vast country is one of amazing natural beauty, largely untouched by the modern world.
